WHAT’S SPECIAL – Peru is an archeologist’s dream: the coastal desert is littered with shell-mounds daitng back to 3,000 BC. Near the present day city of Trujillo are the ruins of Chan Chan, believed to have been the capital of the great pre-Inca Chimu civilization, builders of the Great Wall of Peru across the desert plains and deep into the Western Andes. Cuzco, center of an empire that dominated the central Andes for nearly three centuries, and Machu Picchu, built by the Incas fleeing from the Spanish conquerors, are awe inspiring. Scarcely a month goes by without some archeological discovery and legends about lost cities and undiscovered treasures are still plentiful. But modern Per is also one of the most sophisticated and conservative countries in South America, proud of its traditions and customs.

Temperatures along the coast are coled by the Humboldt Current – the thermometer rarely rises above 80 or falls below 50. Lima sits under a massive low cloudbank most of the time, but it hardly ever rains. There ise considerable mist and damp during the winter (June – September). Summer lasts from December – April. The jungle region is humid and wrm; the mountain areas are generally cooler than the coast with a rainy season lasting throughout the summer. Best time to visit Lima is January – April; the mountain and jungle regions are at their best from June – October. Lima lies in an earthquake zone; the last major tremor was 31 May, 1970.

Nebraska (the Cornhusker State) has rolling land in its eastern portion; the north-central area is fairly flat and sandy; the west is a hilly region, with butte land changng into the Nebraska Badlands in the extreme northwest and west. The climate is cold, dry and snowy in winter. Summers are warm, averaging 76 F. in July. Nebraska experiences moderate rainfall, heaviest in the spring months.

The state, famous for its waving fields of grain, also produces large quantities of fruits and vegetables; livestock, dairying and meat packing are important. Leading manufactures are leather, flour, railway cars, farm equipment and construction materials. Mining and minerals produce great revenue.

Nebraska’s largest cities are Omaha, Lincoln (the capital), Grand Island, Hastings, North Platte and Nebraska City. Hunting is exceptional in most of the state, particularly for pheasant, duck and geese.

As the capital of New York State, Albany is mainly preoccuped with state government. Having comparatively little industry, but a good deal of sales and distribution activity, it is a ‘white collar’ community. For these reasons, Albany has more big-city flavor than most cities of its size.

Area 19 square miles, moderately populated. The mai business district is relatively small, consisting of State St. (hotels, fnancial institutions and office buildings) and Pearl St. (mostly retail shopping). Industry is along the Hudson River to the north of the city, and also across the river in nearby Rensselaer and Troy.

Switzerland is the biggest wine-importer in the world. The Swiss enjoy it with meals and white wine is the favorite aperatif. Their own wines are excellent. Drink them young from the local vineyards. The best red wines come from Ticino, Lake Geneva, Neuchatel and Dole (Valais). The best whites are Hermitage, Fendant and Johannesberg from the Valais (the highest vineyards in Europe); St-Saphorn, and Dezaley from the Vaud. Glühwein, a hot spiced wine, is the inevitable apres-ski drink. Grisons wines include Malans, Jenins and Zizers, and some fine Rhine type wines are produced in the Schaff-hausen region. Liqueurs are delicious and strong: Marc, Kirsch, Pflümli, Williammine are the best known. Most imported wines, spirits and beers are available. Until the Aga Khan discovered it and began the luxury Costa Smeralda development, Sardinia was largely unexploited. It is the second largest island in the Mediterranean (10,000 square miles) with a landscape ranging from the petrified forest at Laerru to the red cliffs and pink sand beaches of Arbatax.

Places to visit in Sardinia: Cagliari, the capital of the south island, and a cosmopolitan port thousands of years ago. Costa Smeralda hotels include Cala di Volpe (Porto Cervo); Cervo (Porto Cervo) and Pitrizza. Porto Rotondo is even smarter than the Costa Smeralda, and Santa Margherita di Pula, another holiday complex, has a nightclub and lots of sporting facilities. You will probably eat in your hotel, but the Trattoria Sacchi at Nuoro is excellent, and well worth to visit. Good bus services on the island, and frequent train service to principal towns. Sardinia is a one-hour filght from Rome.

Sicily has green valleys, flowers, fishing villages, lovely resorts like Taormina, a great capital city, Palermo, and some of the best preserved and most magnificient Greek Temples in the world. You can swim in the crystal-clear sea, or ski on the slopes of Mount Etna. Places to visit include Monreale, with remarkable mosaics in the Norman cathedral; the ancient city of Syracuse, founded in the 8th century BC, the ruined temples at Agrigento, Segesta and Selinunte; the crater of Mount Etna. Palermo has an important opera house where the season usually begins in February. Puppet theaters are a great feature of Palermo. There are great festivals in January (Twelfth Night) and at Easter, and Palermo has a month-long drama and ballet festival in July.
